During this course we explore the relationship between drawing from observation and the imagination.
As an artist, the connection between what you see and how your mind processes that is very important. When you draw what you see, it is inevitably obscured by your imagination, your experiences and your own hand at that precise moment. The aim of this course is to supply you with the tools to gather and transform that information.
In each lesson we shall use a wide range of exercises to enhance our drawing skills and encourage a personal style that you can use outside of the lessons.
Please note: This class will be taught in English
What can you expect from the course Drawing between observation and imagination?
We’ll be drawing from observation of our surroundings, of still objects, and with a model. We’ll be drawing from a moving image, do memory exercises, and use our imagination to bring together compositions.
We’ll be looking at how other artists worked with both observation and imagination such as Pierre Bonnard, Charlotte Salomon, Van Gogh and Ithell Colquhoun and explore how different artists would create images from working with both real life and their own imagination. How did they transform images from the everyday into works of art?
We will use a working sketch book alongside the lessons and for reflection outside of lessons, using it to build a collection of images and ideas to work on at a later time.
The focus is on drawing but this includes many materials including inks, watercolors, soft pastel, oil pastel and collage, eventually focusing on what works best for you as an individual.
We aim to add different layers to the image and the meaning of this. Which colors, materials and shapes tell your story, but also in terms of content; What do I want to express and how do I do it?
Is the course Drawing between observation and imagination right for you?
All levels of experience are welcome.
